Friends with Money is one of those little movies that I love because nothing much really happens, and what does happen happens in moments that are small and subtle…plus I just have a major crush on Jennifer Aniston, I can’t help it. Not a spectacular movie but it had me at the “single gal surrounded by married girlfriends” trailer…(ahem)…
Jennifer Aniston plays Olivia, a part time maid and full time pot-head who’s single life and lack of motivation is a mystery to her married, supposedly-got-their-shit-together girlfriends, Joan Cusack, Francis McDormand, and Catherine Keener (another girl crush of mine). These (wonderful) supporting cast members are Olivia’s support group, and the women have a sisterhood which is much more “gossip-and-tough-love” than it is “Ya-Ya” – thank God. All fumbling through their own imperfect marriages and dealing with the issues that come with being a 30-something woman in a 20-soemthing’s world, each character is flawed and relatable. And as Olivia wanders in a pot-induced cloud through her days, asking her friends for money and sleeping with losers, she is equally likeable and pathetic – you want to shake her and hug her at the same time (which is becoming Aniston’s niche character).
This one could be saved for an at-home HBO viewing or a girls-night-in kind of thing, but if you’re looking for a movie that is subtle and well acted, this is a good pick. Friends with Money is playing now.
